35 Creative Gift Ideas Writers Will Love

Every year, my inbox and social feeds are filled with posts providing gift ideas for creatives.

Every year, I scour those posts for ideas, especially when asked: “what do you want for your birthday/Christmas?” These lists often spark my curiosity – and my creativity.

So I decided, this year, I’m going to create a list of gifts that I think writers would love. Writers like me. Writers in my life.

So, here is my list of 35 creative gifts that writers will love:

• An empty jam jar filled with writing prompts, or a book offering ideas.
  
• A copy of their favourite book. Sure, they may already have a copy, but do they have a special edition or a signed copy from the author?
  
• Blank notebooks to jot down their ideas. I LOVE the Muji notebooks. They are gorgeous to write in!
  
• A music playlist for them to listen to while writing. Something inspirational maybe? Maybe some spa music to zone them out. Even if they don’t listen to the playlist while writing, they’ll love the idea that you thought enough to think about them being creative and considered what music may keep them going.
  
• A handwritten note saying how you believe in them as a writer. This one is gold. It’s a nice thing for writers to come back to when imposter syndrome kicks in. (And yes, that feeling it hits every single writer, no matter how successful they may be.)
  
• Writer at work sign to hang on the door. Especially if they have trouble finding time to write!
  
• A gift card for their favourite café. 
  
• A beautiful notebook. While the Muji ones are great, I have one from years ago that is bound in leather and has handmade paper. I’m too scared to write in it, but I LOVE it. If you frequent Christmas markets, you may find a vendor for these.
  
• A book on writing (suggestions: Stephen King’s On Writing, Bird by Bird by Anne Lamont, Story Genius.)
  
• A deck of oracle cards to spark creativity. I have a writer friend who swears by these.
  
• A voucher for their favourite indie bookshop. We need to support these guys more! (Especially the ones who support Indie Authors!)
  
• Dictation app subscription – to keep them writing, even when they’re on the move. I’ve just started dipping my toe into this idea. It’s great for non-fiction, blog posts, keeping track of random thoughts.
  
• MasterClass Subscription – Learn from famous authors. I received this as a gift one year and learned SO much. (Tip: Sometimes it takes a few classes to see patterns from the authors, so just buying one course may not be enough.)
  
• Their favourite hand cream – just make sure that they aren’t allergic first (says someone who is highly allergic to lavender!)
  
• Fingerless gloves – especially for those cold days or those with arthritic hands.
  
• A candle to support their writing ritual – once again, make sure they aren’t allergic to anything first!
  
• A coffee or tea basket, filled with their favourite coffee or tea, favourite snacks, and a cup to enjoy it from.   
  
• A fountain pen with extra ink. Maybe pair it with a lovely journal or notebook. 
  
• A personalised book embosser
  
• A retro-style keyboard
  
• A subscription to writing software Scrivener. This is one of the BEST writing apps for writers. (Just be sure they don’t already have it!)
  
• An Audible subscription to listen to their favourite authors. As writers, we learn a lot from other writers. Reading is part of the learning process!
  
• A vintage typewriter. It may never be used, but it will be given a place of honour. Alternatively, a vintage-looking keyboard.
  
• Noise-Canceling Headphones – Perfect for focusing in noisy environments.
  
• Ergonomic Keyboard or Mouse – Helps make long writing sessions more comfortable. Check first. (This is something I’d check on first – it may not be something they’d use and these aren’t cheap!)
  
• Inspirational Posters or Art – Literary quotes or images of famous authors.
  
• Desk Organiser – To keep their writing space tidy.
  
• Bookends – Decorative ones for their writing desk or bookshelves. To keep their writing books organised – or the million books they will be writing!
  
• Comfy Blanket or Throw – Perfect for cozy writing sessions.
  
• Mug Warmer – To keep their tea or coffee hot.
  
• Writing Retreat Contribution – A voucher (or cash) to attend a local or virtual writing retreat.
  
• Literary-Themed Board Games – Like Ex Libris or Scrabble.
